Every year, the first real cold snap in the Salt Lake Valley triggers a wave of furnace failures β most of them preventable. A little attention in the fall saves you from a cold house and an emergency service call in the middle of winter.
1. Replace your filter
A clogged filter is the number one cause of furnace strain. If you can't remember the last time you changed it, change it now β and set a reminder for every 1β3 months during heating season.
2. Test the thermostat
Switch to heat and raise the temperature a few degrees. The furnace should kick on within a minute or two. If nothing happens, check the breaker and thermostat batteries before calling for service.
3. Listen for unusual sounds
Banging, squealing, or rattling on startup usually means a worn belt, loose panel, or failing blower motor. These are cheap fixes in October and expensive ones in January.
4. Clear the area around the furnace
Keep at least three feet of clearance. Stored paint, gasoline, or clutter near a gas furnace is a fire hazard.
5. Check your carbon monoxide detectors
Test every CO detector in the house and replace batteries. A cracked heat exchanger can leak carbon monoxide with no smell or visible sign.
6. Look at the flame
On a gas furnace, the burner flame should be steady and blue. A yellow or flickering flame can indicate incomplete combustion β shut it off and call a licensed technician.
7. Schedule a professional tune-up
A tune-up catches the things you can't see: gas pressure, heat exchanger condition, electrical connections, and safety controls. It's the single best way to extend the life of your furnace.
